Diversity: Why diversity is important to us

Diversity comes from Latin and means variety. Diversity or heterogeneity is increasingly becoming an issue for many companies.

This was last seen in June, the so-called Pride Month, when numerous companies signaled their optimism about equality and diversity in everyday work by using rainbow colors in their company logos. In this article we explain what is behind the term diversity and what meaning diversity has specifically for it-economics.

The origin of diversity

The origins of the diversity movement go back to 1969. In New York, there were violent clashes between the police and the guests of a well-known gay bar, the Stonewall Inn. At that time there were always raids on bars that were mainly frequented by the gay community. In the days that followed, thousands of people demonstrated on the streets of New York and protested against these incidents.

A year later, on the anniversary of these events, the first Gay Parades and Pride Parades took place in New York and other US cities. Since then, the day has been celebrated as Christopher Street Day (June 28) by the LGBTQ community - named after the street where the Stonewall Inn bar is located in New York. The rainbow flag has meanwhile become the clear symbol of the LGBTQ community.1

While proud today of what has already been accomplished for members of the LGBTQ community around the world, it began with a great deal of conflict and suffering.

How important is diversity for it-economics?

In June 2021, the coffee beans of our logo also shone in rainbow colors. In doing so, we consciously position ourselves against unfair and violent treatment of all kinds. But what does diversity actually mean for our day-to-day work?

More than 15 nationalities are represented in our "One Team", who pull together and support each other. Diversity is not only important for our corporate culture, but also for our work itself. Different people with different skills and perspectives in combination lead to better results for our advice to our customers. At it-economics, we are firmly convinced that our success is largely shaped by the people in our diverse teams. We can only be successful in the long term if everyone contributes their authentic self and their individual knowledge and skills. Therefore, for us, diversity means focusing on people.

Relationship between diversity and corporate success

Diversity does not automatically create harmony, but sometimes costs energy. For example, decision-making is much easier in homogeneous groups, but at the same time they have a harder time finding suitable answers to changes than heterogeneous teams.

The key findings of the “Diversity Wins – How Inclusion Matters” study confirm that companies with high gender diversity are 25% more likely to be above-average profitable. When looking at ethnic diversity (e.g. internationality of the board), this figure is as high as 36%. Data from more than 1.000 companies in 15 countries was used.2

At it-economics, too, we can see the positive effects of diversity. With us, nobody has to waste their energy trying to pretend, they can concentrate exclusively on their work. This contributes significantly to the productivity and satisfaction of our employees. In addition, the open and transparent corporate culture ensures short communication channels and quick agreements. There are no rigid hierarchies or artificially created hurdles that stand in the way of our daily work. Everyone meets at eye level and different cultures, points of view and characters contribute to finding solutions for us and our customers as quickly and efficiently as possible. The corporate success of it-economics benefits from the diversity of our employees.

How diversity is lived at it-economics

We are committed to the principle of equal opportunities for all employees and to a working environment free of discrimination and harassment. All decisions made by it-economics are based on business needs, professional requirements and individual qualifications - regardless of external characteristics, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, ideology, political orientation and sexual identity or orientation. In any cooperation, we rely on openness, tolerance and team spirit, which is why no form of exclusion is tolerated. We always focus on respectful cooperation and a "fun to work with" working atmosphere.

That's why it's important to us not only in Pride Month to position ourselves with the rainbow flag. With us, all employees should feel comfortable and be able to develop freely. We benefit and learn from and with each other, precisely because everyone is special. At it-economics, diversity is lived every day of the year!
