The way to Agile Coach: A journey with many stages

A certification as Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) is a start to introduce agility in teams. But in practice, many other challenges often arise after a short time. With its new Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) and Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO) courses, it-economics now offers a comprehensive continuing education program for ScrumMasters, based on the recognized certifications of the Scrum Alliance®, the largest agile non-profit organization. it-economics uses the “online classroom” format in cooperation with Applied Frameworks: Participants of the courses learn over a longer period of time compared to traditional intensive formats and can immediately apply and verify what they have learned in practice.

More agility promises many benefits for teams and companies: more effective collaboration, more satisfied customers, faster product development and a higher level of quality. To achieve this goal, all participants, team, scrum master, product owner and the entire organization must continuously develop. Scrum master and product owner play a key role in this: The product owner must always keep the project goal in mind and set the direction for the development team. The scrum master has to make sure that the team unlocks the enormous potential of Scrum for itself and removes obstacles to work in the organization. In order not to leave scrum masters and product owners alone even after learning the basics and to motivate them to develop the necessary skills step by step, the Scrum Alliance has created the three-step “Path to CSP℠”.

Certified Scrum Master (CSM) and Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO): The first step

With the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO®) prospective scrum masters and product owners lay the foundation for the successful application of Scrum in their team. They learn the basics of the framework, the values, roles, artifacts and events and how these interact so that teams can work more effectively and develop better products. it-economics offers two or three day interactive training sessions in manageable groups. In numerous examples, practical situations are simulated and discussed and methods are taught that can later be applied. Thus scrum master and product owner are prepared for working with the team.

Advanced Certified ScrumMaster (A-CSM) and Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO): Continuous learning and growth with the right support program

With the knowledge of the methodical basics the agile work of the scrum team can really begin. In the further course of the cooperation, however, new topics soon emerge: Disputes within the team become more important and problems with stakeholders need to be paid more attention. Usually the first successes of a scrum team are accompanied by thoughts about how other teams can become more agile – the topic of scaling becomes more important.

These new and sometimes very individual challenges require additional expertise and a different approach to knowledge transfer. For this purpose it-economics now offers a program specifically designed for scrum masters and product owners who are looking for support in their further journey to become an agile coach. In contrast to many other providers, it-economics relies on the “online classroom” format in cooperation with Applied Frameworks.

Depending on the individual learning speed, the program lasts between 14 weeks and up to one year. After an onboarding session, participants are introduced to new topics by means of video lessons, exercises, small knowledge checks, concrete facilitation tools and clearly arranged workbooks. Numerous real world challenges ensure that the new skills also find their way into everyday life. In addition, up to 12 coaching sessions are part of the curriculum, in which trainers and participants discuss and jointly deepen content and questions from daily practice. Additional resources provide extra content for those who want to explore a topic in greater depth.

“We chose the online classroom format because it offers several decisive advantages: The participants work through the complex content in easily digestible bits and pieces over a longer period of time and thus have the chance to put what they have learned into practice step by step. Questions that arise quite naturally can be addressed and individual answers found – ideal for a lasting learning effect. Due to the variety of learning materials and the live coaching sessions in small groups, the whole thing remains varied and interactive,” explains Pascal Gugenberger, Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) and Head of the Agile Training Center at it-economics.

The successful completion of the training in combination with a valid CSM certificate and one year of practical experience in the respective role entitles the participant to hold the title “Advanced Certified ScrumMaster” (A-CSM) or “Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner” (A-CSPO) of the Scrum Alliance. This is the next step on the way to becoming a Certified Scrum Professional® (CSP®).

Certified Scrum Professional (CSP): Raise agility to organizational level

Even for an Advanced Certified ScrumMaster or Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner the journey is of course not over. The more effective teams can deal with Scrum, the more they focus on the entire organization, since further improvements often require changes in organizational structures, culture and processes. As a reliable “travel companion”, it-economics will supplement its training program in time for the first A-CSM or A-CSPO graduates with the corresponding Certified Scrum Professional – ScrumMaster (CSP-SM) and Certified Scrum Professional – Product Owner (CSP-PO) courses.
